On Thursday, July 25th, the 7th Joint Seminar was held at Chungbuk National University in South Korea, with whom we have a university-level academic agreement. The seminar, themed “Energy and the Environment,” was attended by Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Shinji Ikaruga; Director of the International Cooperation Office, Prof. Junhwan Song; Prof. Koichi Yamamoto; Prof. Masaharu Nakayama; Assoc. Prof. Koichiro Ienaga; and General Affairs and Planning Section Chief, Ai Matsunaga. Faculty members from both universities presented their research fields, providing an opportunity for Chungbuk National University students to learn about cutting-edge research and for participating faculty members to deepen their understanding of each other’s research.

Prior to the seminar, the Yamaguchi University delegation paid courtesy visits to Dean Se-Woong Chung of the Faculty of Engineering on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 24th, and to President Changseop Koh on the morning of Thursday, July 25th. During the meeting with President Koh, they reflected on the history of exchanges between the two universities, noting that a faculty-wide academic agreement was signed in 2016 when President Koh was the Dean of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which later led to the signing of the university-wide academic agreement. President Koh remarked, “I understand that it is not easy to continue cooperation for over 20 years and to hold seminars and student exchange events annually. I find it remarkable that we have maintained continuous exchanges.” Discussions also touched on graduate school enrollment rates and job hunting for students, with an exchange of opinions on the differences in the situations surrounding universities in Japan and South Korea. In the subsequent meeting with Dean Chung, there was a lively exchange of views on the differences in the research and education environments in the engineering fields in Japan and South Korea.

This joint seminar is held annually on a rotating basis between the two universities, and next year it is scheduled to be held at our Faculty of Engineering. The Faculty of Engineering will continue to promote research exchanges to ensure the ongoing development of the relationship between our university and Chungbuk National University.
